Words from our Brothers and Sisters in the CRC in Liberia
In this new series, The Abide Project will post responses to the Human Sexuality Report and Synod 2022 from denominations around the world that are connected to the Christian Reformed Church. These connections, like the one below, could be from denominations that have ecumenical relations to the CRC.
What denomination are you a part of and in what capacity do you serve your denomination?
I, Rev. Solomon Davis, am with the Christian Reformed Church-Liberia and serve as the national president of the churches in Liberia, West Africa.
How is your denomination affiliated and/or how have you partnered with the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA)?
Our denomination is affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA) because of the strong theological and doctrinal position of the CRCNA. Also we are affiliated by the Timothy Leadership Training Program (TLT). Our denomination members and leaders even use the Today Devotional in home that is written by CRCNA. We also do have pastors from CRCNA that are training our pastors into the firm theological belief of the CRCNA.
In June 2022, the CRCNA Synod declared as confessional teaching that homosexual sex is sinful. Does your denomination have a position on the subject?
Yes, our denomination agreed with the position of the CRCNA Synod which declared as confessional teaching that homosexual sex is sinful. Additionally, we hold the view this is something that we should also not allow to be a discussion among the body of believers.
Would it have any impact on your denomination if the CRCNA does not continue to uphold the historic Christian understanding of marriage and human sexuality
It would be our greatest disappointment if a denomination that has upheld Christian values and principles would want to join political systems in the world. We will continue to uphold our Christian values and cannot be a part of something that is against our cultural values and norms.
Do you hope the CRCNA will continue to hold to this position in the future or that it will be more open to considering other views?
I believe the CRCNA will continue to hold to this position in the future.
